Wipe the incoming mud as clean as possible, then use a garden spray or hose to clean it up to its full potential.

After the house is clean from mud, clean the house and furniture surfaces. Wipe the surface with hot water and detergent. If necessary, disinfect using a solution of 1/4 cup chlorine bleach per gallon of water or a product labeled as a disinfectant to kill germs.

Soak glasses, porcelain items, plastic cutlery, and enamel for 10 minutes in a disinfectant solution of two tablespoons of chlorine bleach per gallon of hot water. Then, dry it in the air and don’t use a towel. Chlorine bleach should not be used for this equipment as it can react with the metal and darken it. Cabinets in kitchens need to be cleaned and rinsed with a chlorine bleach solution before storing dishes.

Use an air conditioner or dehumidifier to remove moisture or open at least two windows for ventilation with outside air. Use a fan to circulate air in the house. If mold has developed, remove objects outside to prevent spores from littering the flooded home. Vacuum floors, ceilings, and walls to remove mold, then clean them with a disinfectant.
